excited? Submissive
urination is an instinctive way for one dog to express
to another that she acknowledges her inferior standing
in the pack. Wetting is a sign that the dog has assumed
the role of follower, not leader; a submissive dog
wets before the alpha to communicate her understanding
of the hierarchy.
If your dog suffers from submissive urination and
your area rugs have just about had as much pet stain
remover as they can stand, follow these simple steps
to reduce incidents of submissive urination:
- Keep
greetings very low key by ignoring the dog
until she has assumed a relaxed state and allow
her
to approach you and your guests at that time.
- Avoid
dominant behaviors such as eye contact, petting
on top of the head, and approaching your
dog head-on.
- Always
approach shy or overly submissive dogs at an
angle so they don’t
feel like you are going to rush them and encourage
your guests to do the
same.
- When
reaching down to pet your dog do so on bended
knee and not by bending at the
waist so that you
don’t appear to be towering over
her.
- Don’t punish or scold your
dog as this will only make your dominance
more apparent to her.
If
the behavior continues, take your dog to the vet
to rule out medical reasons that may be leading
to the behavior. In
the meantime, take care of those rugs because you
don’t want your house to smell of.... ewwww....
peepee dog!!!
